Top things to see and do in Victoria
Step back in time and experience the old world charm of British Columbia’s capital city. Meander through museums, formal gardens and historic buildings then finish off with afternoon tea at one of the delightful tea houses around the city. VICTORIA INNER HARBOUR
Watch the float planes come and go, or enjoy a mixture of activities in one of the most beautiful harbours in the world right in the relaxed centre of Victoria. In the summer you'll see many talented street performers and artists selling their wares on the waterfront walkway. Stay into the evening to watch as the Parliamentary Buildings light up the harbour skyline.
BUTCHART GARDENS
By road, 20km north of Victoria, you'll find the Butchart Gardens - a sea of splendid blooms, rare tree species, varied foliage and water features await your arrival all throughout the year. Wander the gardens and explore the colours and scents of this enchanting National Historic Site of Canada. Make sure to stop in and check out the well-stocked gift shop.
BREWPUBS
Sample local brews along Victoria's Beer Mile, a mile-long loop featuring four brewpubs: Canoe Brewpub (kid-friendly with a great kids menu), Moon Under Water Brewpub, Spinnakers, and Swans. If you want to stretch the beer mile out there are also five craft breweries nearby. Bottoms up!
BRITISH COLUMBIA MUSEUM
The Royal BC Museum is a cultural treasure. It has three permanent galleries, hosts touring exhibits and has an IMAX theatre. Also check out Thunderbird Park next to the museum. It is home to many totem poles and other First Nations monuments.
FAIRMONT EMPRESS HOTEL - HIGH TEA
Take in the views across the Victoria Inner Harbour by stepping into the charming, chateau-style Fairmont Empress Hotel where you can indulge in high tea tradition. Enjoy a three-tiered selection of finger sandwiches, scones, jersey cream, jams, strawberries, petit fours, tarts, and of course, a wide selection of teas.
WHALE WATCHING
Victoria has a reputation as a hot spot for whale watching. Orcas (killer whales) are most frequently sighted, but humpback, minke and grey whales can also be seen, along with harbour seals, sea lions, bald eagles, and porpoises. Many tours leave from downtown Victoria.
PARLIAMENT BUILDINGS
The heritage-listed Parliamentary Buildings stand proudly overlooking the Victoria Inner Harbour and with over 3000 decorative lights turned on every evening making for great photo opportunites. Guided tours inside the buildings are free and last approximately 30 to 45 minutes.
