BIG WHITE, CANADA
Canada’s best ski in/ski out resort
Big White is an hour from Kelowna - and just 3 hours drive from Vancouver. It’s a must see and do for the true powder hounds out there.
This ski resort is famous for its deep, drier powder and fabulous ski in/ski out convenience.
The sheer abundance of snow in this region means the trees at top of the mountain often get so encrusted with snow that it looks like you’re skiing between huge abominable snowmen as you race down the slopes.
Other things to do in Big White
There’s loads of fun to be had off the Big White ski runs. You’ll find an area called Happy Valley at the bottom of the village. Here, you can try your hand at ice climbing, tubing, snowmobiling, ice-skating and snowshoeing, all served by a gondola that runs until 10pm.
Night life and shopping isn’t Big White’s strong point, but there are a decent array of good restaurants to keep you well fed after a day on the mountains.
Why would I want to ski in Big White?
Repeatedly voted as “Best Powder” in Canada, Big White gets an average of 7.5 metres of fluffy powder each year.
This resort was cleverly designed so that skiing is literally at your doorstep. This convenience makes it the perfect destination for a family ski holiday.
Getting to the slopes in Big White
Literally, all of the hotels and apartments in this contemporary ski resort have ski in/ski out access. Even the main street running through the centre of Big White has a ski run to get you to your door!
Big White traveller tips
Big White can be prone to what Canadian locals call a ‘white out’. In other words, a build-up of moisture in the cold air results in almost zero visibility, so be sure to keep an eye on the weather forecast.
On the upside, the people of Canada also have a saying – ‘there’s something in the water in Kelowna’, which refers to the fact that there is a rather disproportionate amount of good-looking folk there. So zero visibility can be a great excuse to bump into a couple around town.
